shape Apply for the EU Blue Card

The EU Blue Card is a residence and work permit for highly qualified professionals (engineers, programmers, etc.) from non-EU countries. The main requirements for the EU Blue Card are:

  • Higher education (diploma or professional experience of not less than five years that would be equivalent to higher education).
  • The salary offered to the specialist should be one and a half times higher than the average monthly gross salary in Lithuania (~€2,000).

The EU Blue Card is valid up to 3 years with an option to extend it for up to 3 more years. EU Blue Card holders may relocate with their family members. Holders of the EU Blue Card are entitled to a permanent residence permit after 5 years.

  • Timeline of getting the card: 1 month (accelerated) or 2 months (normal).
  • State fee: €240 (accelerated) or €120 (ordinary).

New legislative amendments, which came into force on 1 March 2021, introduced simplified procedures for obtaining residence and work permits for foreigners in Lithuania: foreign nationals applying for a temporary residence permit will only have to submit a written application for declaring their place of residence. Highly qualified employees will be able to start work before a residence permit is issued.

shape Learn about the recruitment process

The recruitment process in Lithuanian companies is pretty straightforward. It normally consists of 1-3 interviews with HR and hiring managers.

Sometimes companies ask for candidates to complete a task at home. This is just to make sure the candidate and the company are on the same page. It helps the company assess whether the candidate fits their technical requirements, and at the same time gives the candidate the possibility to try out whether the tasks and the company matches their interests and expectations.

Once the candidate has received an offer, they can get started with migration procedures. The steps are:

  • Applying for a temporary residence permit (get more information about applying for the Blue Card here)
  • Getting a visa to come to Lithuania.

Companies in Lithuania support the migration and relocation process. Companies will often provide a relocation package for this (this could include compensation for the cost of the visa, the temporary residence permit, and other expenses).

They may also offer support in finding accommodation, helping with kindergartens and schools, and other questions you might have.
